Allergies

Seasonal allergies, or hayfever, and non seasonal allergies are very common. Typical symptoms can include watery, itchy, red eyes; a clear runny nose; sneezing; and an itchy palate or throat. Other allergy symptoms can cause wheezing, significant coughing or rashes. The most common seasonal triggers are trees in the spring, grasses in the summer, and weeds in the fall. Nonseasonal allergies can be caused by animals, foods or allergens that can be in your home or environment from many sources.

Effective non-sedating medications are now available for children over the age of 2 without a prescription for treatment of the runny nose and itching eyes. These include loratadine (generic Claritin), Allegra and Zyrtec. These medications can be given once a day as needed for allergy symptoms. For the other symptoms of itching eyes, wheezing or rashes other treatments are available that your doctor can recommend. If you think your child has allergies and he or she is not responding to medication, OR if you are not sure, please make an appointment in our office.

Many children do not require allergy testing if they respond to treatment with medication as needed.
