Flu (Influenza)

Among the many viruses we see causing respiratory illness during the fall, winter and early spring is the influenza virus (commonly called "the flu"). This illness can be particularly severe. Infection with the influenza virus can cause a sudden onset of fever, chills, dry cough, and muscle aches. Other symptoms include headache, fatigue, sore throat, and nasal congestion.

Some children are at increased risk of more serious illness from influenza, because of conditions such as diabetes, asthma, immunity problems, or being treated with immune-suppressing medications.  They are especially vulnerable to complications.

If the flu is diagnosed within the first few days, medication to help with the illness may be prescribed by your doctor.

Please call your doctor if you are concerned about the flu.

Vaccination against influenza is very helpful in preventing or lessening the severity of the illness.  We strongly recommend annual vaccinatins against the influenza for all of our patient. It is best to have your child vaccinted in the early fall, but we have the vaccine available throughout the flu season.
