Vomiting and Diarrhea

Throughout the year, but more often during the warm months, there are numerous viral illnesses that cause vomiting and diarrhea. These illnesses are called viral gastroenteritis or the "stomach flu", and cause inflammation and irritation of the stomach and/or the intestines, leading to vomiting and/or diarrhea. The vomiting typically lasts 1-2 days, and the diarrhea can last a few days longer.  Many other medical problems can cause vomiting and diarrhea; therefore, it is important to contact your provider with any concerns or questions. Significant pain, bleeding or a prolonged or worsening course are just a few of the signs that could indicate complications or a different cause of the problems.

It is important to make sure that your child does not get dehydrated with any of these conditions. If your child has decreased urination, dry mouth, does not make tears, or appears limp or lethargic, they may be dehydrated and will need to be evaluated.
